Public Slow Boat: Huay Xai → Luang Prabang (2 Days on the Mekong)
The public slow boat is one of the most scenic and authentic ways to travel along the Mekong River from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang. The journey takes two days and offers beautiful views of mountains, jungle, small villages, and daily life along the river.
On Day 1, the boat travels from Huay Xai to the small riverside town of Pak Beng, where the boat stops for the night. Accommodation in Pak Beng is not included, so passengers will need to arrange and pay for their own hotel or guesthouse when they arrive. There are many options available within walking distance of the pier.
Food options on the boat are very limited. Usually only small snacks such as crisps and pot noodles are available for purchase. Because of this, we recommend buying a takeaway lunch and some snacks before boarding so you have enough food for the day.
During the cool season (November–February), the breeze on the river can make it feel quite cold, especially in the morning. It’s a good idea to bring a light jacket or sweater to stay comfortable.
Your main luggage will be placed in the boat’s luggage storage area, which may not be easily accessible during the trip. For this reason, we recommend keeping a small day bag with you containing everything you may need during the journey, such as snacks, water, sunscreen, valuables, and any personal items.
The public slow boat is a simple but memorable experience and a great way to see the beauty of the Mekong River at a relaxed pace.
